Q&A from Export Compliance Webinar Series Part 1: Restricted Party Screening

Amber Road would like to thank all of those who attended the first webinar in our three-part Export Compliance Webinar Series. During this series, we address three key steps involved in building an export compliance program, and show you how Export On-Demand can help you get started. The first webinar focused on Restricted Party Screening (RPS), and the attendees asked some great questions. Unfortunately, we ran out of time and were unable to answer all of them. The presenters were kind enough to provide us with written responses to those questions. Here are a few:

  • How long after the initial screen do you continue to follow the entity and notify of a potential hit?
    Partner data is persisted within the application indefinitely – meaning, every time a list is updated, all entities are re-screened. Users have the ability to flag a stored entity so that it is no longer re-screened; however, the majority of our customers allow for the re-screening process to continue for all stored records
  • What is the importance of RPS for a primarily import-based business?
    Restricted Party Screening is not limited to export. Anyone doing business internationally is required to exercise reasonable care with respect to adhering to trade regulations. Therefore, importers, exporters, carriers, brokers, forwarders - anyone involved in an international transaction - should be screening all parties involved in the transaction.
  • How do you integrate this into an import/export situation within an FTZ?
    Screening should be an integrated step within the FTZ process. That is to say, organizations should screen all parties involved in the importation process that leads up to goods entering an FTZ. Just because imported goods are destined for an FTZ doesn’t in any way eliminate the burden to screen all parties involved in the transaction.

Oxbow Carbon LLC Increases RPS Productivity by 82% with Export On-Demand

oxbowOxbow Carbon LLC needed a solution to help to transport and sell the petroleum products they create into markets where they could be used to produce aluminum, steel, and other critical products for the world economy. Oxbow signed on with for Amber Road’s Export On-Demand solution late last year, and the company has already increased its restricted party screening productivity by 82 percent.

Now, Oxbow is able to centralize and automate its export compliance processes across 90 countries and screen against over 250 lists. Using Amber Road’s hosted technology, Oxbow consolidated 13 ERP systems into one common database portal, creating a simplified and efficient trade compliance process.

“We were looking to improve efficiency and productivity on our old RPS model. We looked at Amber Road’s Export On-Demand solution as a way to achieve those productivity gains and significantly reduce manual effort,” said Louis Lisowski, director of compliance, Oxbow Carbon LLC. “Not only did the software meet our requirements, the implementation phase of the project was 75 percent under the budgeted implementation costs.”
