As 2016 is in full swing, we have received many questions on where Customs would like you to focus your trade compliance strategy and how to best survive 2016. We have compiled the questions and here are answers to the most relevant and pressing:
How does your team conduct an import or export assessment? How long does it take?
Amber Road’s Trade Advisory Practice supports strong compliance programs through external reviews of your firm’s import or export trade compliance program. Our assessments provide feedback on your company’s strengths and weaknesses, with a compliance improvement plan to address any gaps between your desired compliance rating and current program.
We are considering moving into ISA – how can your team guide us through the process?
Joining the Importer Self-Assessment (ISA) program is an excellent step towards becoming a Trusted Trader with Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Our team has guided many firms into ISA, earning them the title of Trusted Trader, while simultaneously removing them from the CBP audit pool. That’s right – ISA participants cannot be audited under a Focused Assessment – another great reason to partner with CBP for greater benefits.
We have a database of 50,000 parts to be classified; is this an area we should be examining in 2016 knowing there are changes coming in 2017?
Hopefully, you have a written internal control over the classification process, including who is authorized to classify at your firm, their required level of experience and how your team documents their classification decisions. With the updates expected to come in in 2017, it would be great for your team to have internal and external audits that will assess your current level of accuracy and then outline a process to address the pending changes and how they may impact your firm’s classification process.
